advanced canyoning

Our Advanced Canyoning Adventures are no stroll in the park. They are long, hard days in remote locations. The terrain is steep and strenuous with several short scrambling sections. There are several abseils and technical rope work within the canyons. Participants must have a high level of fitness along with abseiling and canyoning experience. Blue Mountains Adventure Company reserves the right to deny access to anyone whose fitness and experience (in our opinion) is deemed to be inadequate for the adventure chosen, and/or who is a hazard to themselves or others.

Butterbox Canyon

A spectacular canyon with superb rock architecture. This great action packed trip offers lots of variety with seven exciting abseils and several adrenalin pumping waterjumps! One of the highlights is the two challenging 25 metre abseils straight down a deep dark slot. The second abseil here is off a giant chockstone wedged between the canyon walls. After finishing the canyon it’s not over yet, as there is a 15 metre, grade 12 rockclimb to conquer on the way out. You will be safely roped and belayed by our experienced guides on this short exposed section 100 metres above the deck! A great finale to an awesome day. The steep exit walk and climb usually takes 2-3 hours. Butterbox is a challenging, adventurous trip that is physically demanding.

Hole in the Wall Canyon

One of the hidden gems of the Blue Mountains, Hole in the Wall is a spectacularly narrow, varied and interesting canyon with breathtaking rock formations. There are two main abseils, one is an 18 metre freefall through a hole in the floor of the canyon, and the other is a 10 metre slippery log abseil – straight through a waterfall. There is waterjumps, swimming and an underground glowworm-lit cave, where the fantastic display of glowworms is as impressive as the night sky. A highlight of the trip is exiting from the glowworm cave via a short squeeze with packs off. The canyon ends on a sunny rock shelf at the waters edge. The walk out takes 1 and ½ hours, the first 20 minutes involves the most strenuous walking.

$290 per person incl GST. Private group departures available.

Whungee Wheengee Canyon

Deep, dark and mysterious, Whungee Wheengee is without a doubt one of the very best canyons you’ll find anywhere. There are abseils, glowworm lit tunnel swims, rock scrambling, waterjumps and duckunders. A duckunder is where the roof of the canyon comes right down or just above water level, making it necessary to swim underwater for a short distance. Besides the sheer delight and challenge of the activities themselves, Whungee Wheengee offers stunning natural beauty that will take your breath away. Keep a look out for abundant local wildlife such as yabbies, eels and water dragons. The canyon also boasts several sections of fantastic rock architecture, the most spectacular being a 50 metre deep slot that is little more than a metre wide. Shortly after here, Whungee Wheengee joins the much broader expanses of the Lower Wollangambe Canyon. The sudden rise in the water temperature is most welcome as there are several long swims before the exit point is reached.
The walk out takes about 1 1/2 hours and is steep in places. Overall, this is a long, hard day, suitable for fit adventurous people who aren’t afraid of the dark!

$290 per person incl GST. Private group departures available.
