Welcome to our ongoing series of monthly walks in the Blue Mountains. The intention of these walks is to provide an opportunity to perhaps take your first steps into trekking, shake the dust off your existing gear, test out new gear or as a training walk for an upcoming trip with one of the World Expeditions Travel Group companies.
The walks take place on a Saturday, once a month, and on each occasion, we will explore a different trail/s in the Blue Mountains.
Once you have booked online you will be advised of the meet location and start time. We encourage you to meet at the notified location however we can also offer transport from/to our Blue Mountains Adventure Company office in Katoomba. A briefing and the necessary housekeeping such as completion of waivers will be conducted at the meet location before we begin our journey.
You will be led by qualified, experienced, and knowledgeable Blue Mountains Adventure Company guides.
Included in the day’s activity is a hearty lunch selected from our seasonal menu. When you book online, you will be prompted to make your selection.
Come and join us, meet the team – and explore the spectacular Blue Mountains on one of these upcoming walks:
JAMISON VALLEY CLIFFTOP WALK (Approx 14km): Breaking slightly from our ‘trails less travelled’ intent, on this occasion we will commence our explorations on the popular clifftop walks near Katoomba. The full-days walk will eventually take us away from the heavily visited trails near the Three Sisters on to the lesser-travelled trails through Leura to Wentworth Falls. The walk will spoil us with abundant views of the Jamison Valley. Whilst we spend most of our time high above the Valley, we will also pass through a few special lush, forested pockets where a cool off in the creeks will welcome us if the day is a hot one. There will also be a few occasions of walking the tree-lined back streets of Leura. (Grade: MODERATE)
GROSE VALLEY AND THE BLUE GUM FOREST (Approx 9km): This walk is shorter in terms of distance covered compared to our other monthly walks however it is the most challenging. We will be crossing the Grose Valley wilderness from west to east and as you’d expect this will require a sizable descent into the Blue Gum Forest, and a shorter sharper ascent out on the other side. The descent into the Grose Valley will be via Perry’s Lookdown which involves many steps so be prepared. This route has been recently reconstructed after the damage caused by the 2019/2020 bushfires. After exploring the Blue Gum Forest and crossing the Grose River, we’ll climb out of the Grose Valley up to the one of the best vantage points of the Valley, Lockley Pylon. We’ll be taking our time so the walk should be suitable to any active participant with good mobility. The group size will also be limited to 10 participants. (Grade: CHALLENGING)
WATERFALLS OF LAWSON (Approx. 14km): We return to the often-neglected mid-Mountains for this delightful exploration of the many waterfalls that surround the town once known as simply ‘Blue Mountain’. We will visit Adelina Falls, Federal Falls, Cataract Falls and Junction Falls to the south of Lawson; and Dantes Glen, St Michaels Falls, Fairy Falls and Frederica Falls on the Empires Pass Track to the north. This walk will be a loop with no transfers necessary. The meeting location will be situated close to Lawson Railway Station. (Grade: INTRODUCTORY)
RUINED CASTLE AND FEDERAL PASS (Approx 18km): This is the longest of our walks in this series so you will need to be prepared for the longer day and increased distance. It is a classic Blue Mountains walk. We will enjoy a beautiful descent into the Jamison Valley via Fern Bower to Leura Forest. From here we will connect with Dardanelles Pass then on to Federal Pass beneath the iconic Three Sisters. Once on Federal Pass we will make our way to the aptly named ‘Ruined Castle’ - one of the best vantage points in the Jamison Valley providing 360-degree views. The climb up to the top of the Ruined Castle is optional as is the fast track out of the valley via the Scenic Railway should you wish to shorten your walk at the end (NOTE: use of the Railway is at your own cost on the day). (Grade: MODERATE to CHALLENGING)
GRAND CANYON WALK AND THE CLIFFTOP TRACK (Approx. 10km): The Grand Canyon Walk is the best-known walk in the Blue Mountains. On its own it is a half-day walk however we have combined the nearby Clifftop Track to create a 10-kilometre loop. The Grand Canyon offers the chance to enjoy some of the tiny fraction of cool temperate rainforest remaining in the Blue Mountains. The Clifftop Track offers vast views across the iconic Grose Valley with its towering escarpments and a seemingly endless sea of greenery. If this is your first foray into walking in the Blue Mountains, then this is a great walk to start! (Grade: MODERATE)
